Festival origin
Over centuries of historical evolution, the festival absorbed profound cultural meaning, most notably the commemoration of the patriotic Chu state poet, Qu Yuan. Legend has it that during the Warring States period, Qu Yuan, devastated by the downfall of his homeland, drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. To prevent fish from devouring his body, the locals rowed boats and beat drums to save him (which evolved into dragon boat racing) and threw rice dumplings into the river (which evolved into eating zongzi). Depending on the region, the festival is also said to commemorate other historical figures like Wu Zixu or Cao E.
